Does muscle affect BMI accuracy?

Yes — BMI cannot tell the difference between muscle and fat. A bodybuilder at 200 pounds and 10% body fat has the same BMI as a sedentary person at 200 pounds and 30% body fat. Obviously not the same health profile.

For competitive athletes, BMI is basically useless. But here is the thing: most of us are not competitive athletes. For the average person who does not deadlift 400 pounds, BMI is actually pretty accurate at predicting health risks. If you are muscular and your BMI says overweight, add a waist measurement or body fat test for context.

How often should I check my BMI?

Every 3-6 months for most people. Monthly if you are actively losing or gaining weight. Daily is pointless — your weight fluctuates 1-2 kg just from water, salt, and digestion.

I weigh myself every Saturday at 7:30 AM. Same scale, same time, same underwear (clean, obviously). This removes daily noise and shows real trends. Last month I thought I gained 2 kg in a week. Turns out I was just constipated. TMI? Maybe. But accurate data matters.

Is BMI different for children?

Completely different. Kids use BMI-for-age percentiles, not adult categories. A 10-year-old's "normal" BMI might be 18, while a 15-year-old's is 22. Both can be perfectly healthy. This calculator is for adults 18-65. For kids, talk to a pediatrician about age-appropriate charts.

Can I use BMI during pregnancy?

Absolutely not. Pregnancy weight gain is normal and necessary. BMI is irrelevant here. Like using a rain gauge to measure snowfall. Wrong tool for the job. Focus on your doctor's guidance instead.

Why does my BMI say overweight when I feel fine?

Because BMI does not measure fitness, muscle, or how you feel. It measures weight relative to height. That is it. One data point. You can feel fine and still have elevated blood pressure or creeping cholesterol. Use BMI as a signal, not a verdict. Get the blood work. Check your waist. Talk to your doctor.

What is the best time to measure weight?

Morning, after bathroom, before eating or drinking. Your body is basically empty then. Any other time, you are carrying food, water, and regret. Also measure in the morning for height — your spine compresses during the day. I am literally 1.5 cm shorter at 8 PM than at 8 AM.

Does BMI work for older adults?

Sort of, but the "normal" range shifts. After 65, BMI 23-27 may actually be healthier than 18.5-22 because low weight means muscle loss and bone density issues. My dad's doctor wants him at BMI 25, not 22. Biology changes. The rules change with it.

Is BMI outdated?

Partially true. We do have better tools: DEXA scans, bioelectrical impedance, waist-to-hip ratio. But those are either expensive, inconvenient, or require trained professionals. BMI is free and takes 10 seconds. It is like a thermometer — it does not tell you what disease you have, just that something might be worth checking.
